I haven't had anything resembling an "official", regularly-updated web site in more than 10 years at this point. It's easy to blame social media for sucking all the air out of the room, but the other part of it for me is that I just got tired. Early on I thought of the stuff I put online as a professional reflection of myself, which made the flood of content from new services like Blogger feel like competition, and I eventually realized that I'm not good enough, dedicated enough, or organized enough to maintain any kind of following on the web. And maintaining my own instances of Textpattern, Movable Type, Wordpress, Drupal, etc (I tried just about all of them) always became thankless after that new project smell wore off.

And then social media sucked all the air out of the room, and for a long time it didn't feel like there was much point
