Trying to improve my folio by going back to some pieces that had promise, but didn't get finished. Even though this orcish lady is still fairly sketchy, she's a) definitely the most promising of the paintstuff I have here so far, and b) I "only" have to do the head and shoulders.
Feelin' a bit pressured (Realising your folio is not as good as you'd like hurts), but... I *can* do this. I hope. https://mastodon.social/media/7YldGqyV2iSD-fbxUmM https://mastodon.social/media/qIVj1cIz5VfC0Fx3mbw
Fun fact: A lot of doing an art is staring at it, thinking wistfully of how you could be sketching, while *also* mentally mapping out lights and shadows and other fun stuff.
Oh, and googling weird things like "Elf ear with septicemia" for reference (Not an actual thing I've googled, but I could see uses for googling such a thing)
Actually, this reminds me of a thing I said on Hellbird earlier this week, and the realisation that yes, I was *only* half-joking about it. The other half was deadly serious.
See, nearly every artbook I've seen deals with how to *do* a thing. Sometimes incompletely (Oh hai, jumping from construction lines to greyscale cel! :rage: ) . But how many deal with fucking up? How many *prepare* you for the fact you *will* fuck up, even during your best stuff?
Right now, what I'm effectively doing is a paintover... Literally reworking elements of the picture from the ground up, while *trying* to maintain cohesion. I've recognised I like the core idea, but at the same time, I'm fixing what I fucked up.
I never learned that from an artbook.
...To clarify, I'm using techniques I learned, but I'm using them on *top* of the big one I had to teach myself (paintover.) And at least part of why I'm talking instead of doodling is that I'm *dreading* doing the hair.
Hair is a *fucker* to paint well.
Of course, such a book may well have to tread carefully. Some things are, hands down, mistakes. Escher Girls are a prime example. No, buddy, the spine *doesn't do that* .
On the other hand, there's something that, for a while, was nicknamed "Tumblr nose", and *that* ... Is a stylistic choice, a lot of the time. It's where the nose is *always* redder/more heavily shaded. Not a mistake. A choice.
Okay. Hopefully that hair has a *noticeable* and positive difference. It damn well should, I spent the last hour on that nearest half. https://mastodon.social/media/GhDFIMKR_xN0P1EzGic
Okay... What's left? Ear. Gotta fix the ear. Hair *around* the ear and behind it. Black-metal pauldron. Some of the shadows. Work out what the heck I'm doing with the chest/shoulders. https://mastodon.social/media/aUBcSXmDwd6Pzf4kvjE
Ohgods, I'm doomed. Karma is going to strike me down for having something this good, this early. https://mastodon.social/media/c9hbfBrEFeUL8sGGBAk
CALLED IT! STAIRS! Stairs in a wilderness are never good lots of out of depth gribbleys like Glowmoths or Chitin Pumas, *but they have rilly good loot sometimes and...* https://mastodon.social/media/QvnIgezeCp2hgSLbSAI
I take that back. Slime baboons. Why did it have to be slime baboons? https://mastodon.social/media/OuhKus2TjIqnlwp8yho
Okay. I think... We're over the worst of the *early* early game. Level 2 of Red Rock Caves' 4. I've done this before. I can do it again. https://mastodon.social/media/G-0wCs_JXiEMRHXLo44

When it comes to roguelikes, never disbelieve the message of this comic. It *will* come true. http://angband.calamarain.net/view.php?date=2006-06-13
Job interview tomorrow. I am, quite obviously, happy, as it's firmly in a past experience bailiwick (Bar work), full time, main obstacle is the commute.
