Some stuff about cryptic crosswords

BAFFLE

So here the definition is 'fox' and the wordplay is 'first to feature in rewritten fable'.

The *first* letter of feature is F, 'rewritten' is indicating an anagram of FABLE, and 'to feature in' is saying you need to stick the F inside that. Thus BAFFLE, which means fox - as in the verb meaning to confuse.

AMBER

The definition is 'Warning light'.

The wordplay is CHAMBER (which is a room), minus CH (for central heating)

Like many clues I got this by guessing the answer first (what would a warning light be?) and then seeing if I could work backwards from that to the wordplay.

Not sure if it's a standard worldwide but here in the UK an 'amber' light is between red and green on traffic lights - so it 'warns' you when the light is about to change...

ENCLOSURE

Double definition!

Somethin you put in an envelope (a bit like attaching a file to an envelope) could be called an enclosure.

You might write in a letter "I hereby enclose a cheque for £150", for example

PENCIL CASE

A nice simple anagram...

'Abroad' indciates an anagram, and PENCIL CASE is an anagram of 'nice places'.

The defintion is 'where writers gather' - 'writers' in this case meaning writing implements
