The modern democratic party is a fundamentalist religion not unlike the "evangelical Christian" kind of the 1980s:
Its more deluded members/followers seem to be mostly people who were unpopular in high school attempting to get revenge on those who either were popular, or who at least didn't live in some perpetual sort of lack of due attention crisis - essentially "bullying back" with ridiculous displays of appearance and/or behavior and/or beliefs, very much as though having a contest to see who can bully back the most obnoxiously. There's a smug, sneering "Oh yeah? If you think what you did to drive our oppressors nuts is something, just wait until you see what I do!" to their antics.
