Meeting notes for the week starting 19 December 2021

19 December 2021 - 7-8:30 PM - Bobbe - 65 people

Major Musts 1) I must be perfect, you must love me 2) You must be perfect, or you are damnable being and must be punished 3) Life must be good and easy, or it sucks.

What exactly is self-esteme

What is self acceptance

What about depressions, anger, fear, anxiety

Fear is thinking "Don't begin it"

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

― Frank Herbert, Dune

What do I want for my future What am I currently doing to get there

20 December 2021 - 7:30-9AM - Hatrick and Kibou - 40 people

Position on Spirituality - We believe that the power to change addictive behaviours resides within each individual and does not depend upon adherence to any spiritual viewpoint. The use of religious or spiritual beliefs and practices in recovery is a personal choice and not a part of the SMART program as such.

Holiday Protection Plan Christmas Group Therapy - I don't believe in myself (Santa) I think I'm by Polar (Snowman) All the reindeer call me names (Rudolph) I'm in a dead end job (elf)

Not succumb to the dislocations imposed by the Covid new normal; Not sucumb to the added stress of family get-togethers.

Plan ahead - Remember No is a complete sentence. And have an exit strategy. Plan out who you need to tell you are leaving.

Take away is BE PROACTIVE - make sure you have a planned activity for the rest of the night.

Support: Wingman, Chaperone, pre arrange with host "don't serve me" VR world, schedule a zoom call.

Have a plan B if things go wrong.

Make sure you have things to support your VACI (food, books, colored pens, etc.)

Make sure you Eat Right (Healthy & On schedule) and get sleep.

Here is a SMART story about slips from Hourglass52: “If I were driving from NY to LA and I got a flat in Denver, Would I have to go back to NY, get it fixed and start over from there? Here at SMART I can see the tire is flat; use tools to fix it, And continue on my journey from where I am. A lapse is a flat tire in recovery – inconvenient rather than a disaster.”"

21 December 2021 - 8:30-10AM - Amelia27 & Time Is Over Sir? - 58 people

Try Habit Stacking - get a good habit and then link / stack other good habits to that.

The artist way - write 750 words in the morning (3 pages of text) to be able to reframe the day before it starts. A link to what cyberjunkie is talking about https://750words.com/

Escapism-look for an adventure/go out doors/ be curios/ take positive risks/VACI's/ Self medication-meditate Feel more confident socially-challenge oneself to be social-take risks to be vulnerable/go to a coffee shop/ just get out/knitting groups etc./connection/challenge oneself Euphoria-reframe as boring Tastes good Lessens pain mentally /physically-take medicatons regularly Lessens feelings of incompetence Gets negative past demons chatter out of ones head/intrusive thoughts/memories

21 December 2021 - 6-7:30PM - Rachel Blue? - 144 people Topics
Dealing with the urge to continue after one use early in the day (throwing away the day) vs being a one drink issue.

  • Think about where this is going to end up.
    * Use STOPP to not get into the flow.
    * Delay, Deny, Escape, Avoid, Distract, Substitute

Avoiding triggers at holiday gatherings

  • Manage them by having a plan
  • set boundaries, bring a sober buddy, pre tell on yourself, let people know you aren't drinking/using. \\
  • I also tend to bring a bottle of sparkling cider or something that I can have that's still "festive" but works for me.

Dealing with a loss of a friend to an OD over the holidays

  • It's never easy. Survivors guilt.

Dealing with trigger when you're surrounded by people who are using

  • STOPP. Get a change of scenery. Try to stay busy.

Shifting social life from drinking/partying to a life that's not about that.

Managing relationships

Dealing with telling others that you are in recovery

  • Where do I (we?) learn these responses of guilt, shame, embarrassment, etc? Where does this message come from?
