Notes from SMART sessions 9 - 15 January

9 Jan 2022 Sunday 7-8:30PM - Beginners meeting - Bobbe and Hatrick - 68 people

Bobbe is out, so it's Hatrick on a solo, with Amy to join

This week 5 of 12 Coping with urges. Didn't start the topic until 8:15

How to recognize unhelpful thinking. Thoughts lead to emotions which leave to behaviors.

ANT - Automatic Negative Thoughts. They happen to everyone.
Word Exchange - Statement Exchange - Emotional Vocabulary Exchange

Jammed with Slop

  • Jumping to Conclusions
  • All or nothing thinking
  • Mental Filters - Dwelling on negative details
  • Magnification - Blowing things out of proportion
  • Emotional Reasoning - I feel, therefore it is
  • Discounting the Positive Qualities - That doesn't count
  • Should Statements - Ought to, have to, must, I should, I shouldn't, ....
  • Labeling - Negative Labels, alcoholic, addict, compulsive gambler, shopaholic, codependent -- single words cannot describe complex human beings
  • Over-generalizations - Why me, this always happens to me.
  • Personalizing - guilt, shame, blame, inadequacy - it's all my fault

Look for post from Hammer

Successful people like what they are doing, they actually love what they are doing.

Physical urges:

  1. Focus on the area where you experience the craving
  2. Acknowledge how you experience the craving
  3. Deep breaths as you experience the urge
  4. Repeat focusing with each part of your body that experience the craving
  5. Release the tension as you release each deep breath
  6. Feel it being gone and be happy

10 January 2022 Monday 7:30-9AM - Hatrick and Kibou - 41 people

This weeks quote: "It's never too late to be who you might have been" - George Elliot

Topic is Manifesting Motivation

  • New to recovery
  • Reverted or Lapsed
  • Stuck in Recovery
  1. What do we value (HOV) Include yourself
  2. Transistion Inwards - what does your body say? What do you need to let go to make space for change
    1. Need courage to bring this to life
  3. Make today your day
    1. Move from Limiting to Actioning
    2. Let go of Negativity, Cynicism, Complacency
    3. Be motivated by Death (short time to go / maximize your life)
    4. Never too late to optimize your life
  4. Think Positive - Negative goals are not Motivational
How are you living your HOV
Your new behavior an Opportunity or a sacrifice

"I fell off the wagon! The wagon has stopped and is waiting for me to climb back on – when I can work out how I fell off, that is a BONUS! I still have ALL the distance the wagon has travelled, and ALL the lessons I have learnt to this point. This trip and fall might be an opportunity to LEARN SOME MORE as I climb back on. The wagon is WAITING and will take off once I CHOOSE to get back on."

Recovery is an action word - Hardwork - 4 P’s Practice. Patience, Perseverance and Persistence

The Choice is Mine
Life may not let me choose my lot,

Now is in our Hula Hoop, Yesterday and Tomorrow are not.

Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. —Jon Kabat-Zinn

Video on Urges -

  • Activating Event
  • Belief about the actuating event (ourselves, others, life in general)
  • Consequences (ie using)
  • Dispute the event
  • Effective new rational belief
  • Future, flexible non-extreeme attitude towards this adversity.
*Going forward what doubts, reservations, or objection to I still have towards this new attitude.

Byron Katie's 4 questions to challenge your thinking:
Question 1: Is it true? This question can change your life. ...
Question 2: Can you absolutely know it's true? ...
Question 3: How do you react—what happens—when you believe that thought? ...
Question 4: Who would you be without the thought? ...

End of the week. A good week. A rougher start with the change in Bobbe's meeting. Nice note with Hatrick and his meeting.

I was able to help someone taking the 1000's of tools and picking 4 to try.
